    RESEARCH
Animal science faculty, assisted by their undergraduate research assistants, are currently engaged in the following areas of investigation: manipulation of sex ratio outcomes for superovulated beef cows; concentrating the polled gene in fullblood Gelbvieh cattle; evaluating new varieties of warm season grasses and legumes for summer grazing beef cattle; effects of varying mineral concentrations on reproductive performance of grazing beef cows; comparison of pelvic shape versus calving ease of several breeds of beef cows; and evaluation of coproduct feeds for beef cattle and sheep.

    FACILITIES
The University Farm at Truman State University consists of 400 acres, located about one mile from the campus, on the edge of Kirksville. The Farm includes 54 acres of cropland (alfalfa-orchard grass hay and corn) and 6 acres devoted to undergraduate agronomic research; the remainder is pasture land for the University horse and cattle herds. Facilities include a classroom and office building, cattle and equine breeding barns, shop, two greenhouses, hay storage, and some on-farm student housing. Classrooms as well as teaching and research laboratories are located in Magruder Hall.

The cattle herd maintained by Truman consists of approximately 40 purebred and full blood Gelbvieh cattle housed at the University Farm for use in classes and research projects. Students are involved in all aspects of management, selection, breeding and feeding of the beef herd.

For information about the horse herd, visit the Equine Science Area of Specialization page.
