CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to provide students with hands-on, practical experience in general agricultural techniques and management. Specific topics may vary semester to semester depending on student interest, Farm needs, and other factors.

PREREQUISITES

None.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

Among a variety of objectives, students are expected to:
  • learn farm safety practices;
  • become familiar with types of equipment and their uses;
  • utilize techniques in farm construction;
  • understand the design and function of livestock facilities.

  • Week 2: Equipment: Types and uses
  • Week 3: Basic tractor operation and maintenance
  • Week 4: Tillage and planting
  • Week 5: Tillage, planting and harvesting
  • Week 6: Hay mowing and baling: round vs. square
  • Week 7: Vehicle use and maintenance
  • Week 8: Hauling and trailering
  • Week 9: Pasture management
  • Week 10: Fencing: Types and construction
  • Week 11: Fencing: Layout and construction
  • Week 12: Fencing: Construction and gates
  • Week 13: Facilities: Design and use

BASIS OF STUDENT EVALUATION

This course is based on student attendance to and participation in every class meeting. One written assignment will also be required. Grading will be based on the following:
  • attendance: 40% of course grade
  • participation: 40% of course grade
  • written assignment: 20% of course grade
