COURSE DESCRIPTION
The focus for this course will be woody landscape plants and their use in the landscape. The first half of
the semester will target the identification and recognition of common woody landscape materials, including trees,
shrubs and ground covers. Plants often will be categorized in a thematic way that focuses on functional use in the
landscape. The second half of the semester will focus on introductory principles of landscape design.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of AGSC 318 are as follows:
- to provide to the student an appreciation of the urban and suburban landscapes and their importance in human
experience and culture;
- for the student to learn to identify on sight common woody landscape materials and to learn some useful
botanical terminology associated with the identification and description of such plant materials;
- for students to learn maintenance considerations, cultural issues, notable features and the landscape value
of a select group of woody plant materials;
- for students to learn basic principles of landscape design;
- for the student to design a residential, institutional (public), private, or other landscape as a
learning experience.
PREREQUISITES
AGSC 100, AGSC 108, BIOL 100 or BIOL 107 and AGSC 218.
