COURSE DESCRIPTION

A study of the anatomy and physiology of reproduction in mammals with major emphasis on farm animal species.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To examine reproductive systems of domestic livestock and animals from the whole animal down to the cellular and molecular level. Will consider the following species: bovine, ovine, porcine, equine, and to some degree the human.

EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING

Three 100-point tests
One 150 point comprehensive final
One 100-point literature review

Grades will be determined as a percentage of the 550 points possible for the class. Letter grades will be assigned as follows: 90 - 100 = A, 80 - 89 = B, 70 - 79 = C, 60 - 69 = D, below 60 = F.

Policy on absences and missed work:
  1. Excuses for unauthorized absences will not be accepted.
  2. An authorized absence does not excuse the student from any missed work.
  3. Permission for making up any missed work will be granted only for authorized absences arranged in advance of the absence or in the case of sickness, injury, or death in the family. In these cases, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the professor as soon as is possible. In the case of absence due to sickness, the student must present verification of the illness from the Student Health Center or family doctor.
  4. Work missed due to unauthorized absence cannot be made up and a grade of zero will be recorded. Work missed due to an authorized absence must be made up or will be assigned a grade of zero.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Purpose

To allow the student to explore a topic of interest in reproductive physiology.

Possible subjects
  • Menopause (human)
  • Infertility (in livestock species or in the human)
  • Protocols or regimes for improving ease or efficiency of breeding (in livestock species)
  • In vitro breeding (in livestock species or in the human)
  • Nutritional effects on breeding (dietary components such as cholesterol, folic acid, etc)
  • Embryo transfer (in livestock species or in the human)
  • Theories about the onset of puberty (in livestock species)
  • Other topics with clearance from me
Expectations

The paper is to be 7-10 pages typewritten (double-spaced) and should have correct grammar and spelling. If late, five points per day will be deducted including weekends. Papers will be graded as follows:
  • Following Journal of Animal Science guidelines 10%
  • Spelling and grammar 10%
  • Outline 10%
  • References (a minimum of 8) 10%
  • Content 60%
