COURSE DESCRIPTION

An experiential study of reproduction in horses.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives of AGSC 353 are as follows:
  • to consider, by way of experience, the practical aspects of breeding horses;
  • to learn first-hand how to foal mares out;
  • to learn how to handle and collect stallions;
  • to learn how to artificially inseminate a mare;
  • to learn how to ultrasound and palpate pregnant and postpartum mares;
  • to practice imprint training of foals.
PREREQUISITES

AGSC 352: Animal Reproduction

COURSE OUTLINE

The course schedule will be driven by the horses, but students will be introduced to palpation and ultrasonography, stallion handling and collection procedures, semen analysis techniques, the use of extenders for equine semen, and practical aspects of foaling mares out. In addition, students will imprint train their foals.

EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING
  • Four 50-point quizzes, 200 points total
  • One 50-point problem set
  • One comprehensive written lab final, 150 points
  • One final practical, 100 points
  • Participation and attendence, 100 points
