RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY
The research process and use of the scientific method are important
mechanisms for teaching science and scientific principles to undergraduates.
It is my belief
- that research should be focused on Truman's undergraduate students;
- that research is a process of discovery;
- that the researcher should use the research process to transmit to
his students an enjoyment of learning and discovery;
- that the researcher should encourage his students to seek out and
pursue careers in science and veterinary medicine;
- that the research process teaches undergraduates to think logically
and rationally;
- that the research process teaches undergraduates to communicate
effectively; and
- that the research process teaches undergraduates life skills such
as commitment, following through on responsibilities, working with others
effectively, and proper time management.
While I would like for my research program at Truman to be student-focused
and student-driven, I above all want it to be a learning experience for both
the student and myself. Research at Truman therefore must by necessity
contain a high level of faculty involvement, and must be proactive and not
reactive regarding the student's decision-making. Many learning
opportunities arise during the course of a research project, and I would
like to take full advantage of those with all of my students.
