RESEARCH
Breeding corn for grain quality traits
Specific objectives include developing high-amylose germplasm
Use of near-infrared spectroscopy as a selection tool in corn breeding
 |

|
Agriculture students learn basic genetics, plant breeding and marketing
concepts by assisting in the development, processing and selling of Truman
popcorn on campus |
The focus of the corn breeding project at Truman is in the utilization of
plant genetic resources for improving characteristics of industrial starches |
Ears of a type of corn originally grown by Native Americans (Mandan tribe),
which are segregating the (ae) allele. Mutant kernels from many crosses
are analyzed to identify desirable starch characteristics |
Research students perform a number of analytical techniques in order to
screen materials for grain quality traits |
