Beef Cattle Show Team
The Beef Cattle Show Team is a student-based organization heavily involved in
the showing and sale of the University-owned Gelbvieh herd. Students are
responsible for selection, management, fitting and handling of the animals under
the supervision of Dr. Glenn Wehner. Cattle have been shown at the American
Royal Livestock Show (Kansas City, MO), the Missouri State Fair (Sedalia, MO),
the Iowa State Fair (Des Moines, IA), the Northeast Missouri District Fair in
Kirksville, MO and the Adair County Fair, also held in Kirksville. Recent
placings include Senior Bull Calf Champion (MO State Fair and the American
Royal), Reserve Grand Champion Cow-calf Pair (American Royal, 1999 and 1997),
Grand Champion Gelbvieh Female (NEMO District Fair, 1998), and numerous class
placings. Our cattle have sold well in Missouri and several surrounding states.
Examples are the high-selling bred heifer (Heart of America Gelbvieh Sale, 1999)
and second high-selling heifer (Heart of America Gelbvieh Sale, 2000).
The Beef Cattle Show Team offers students an unique opportunity to learn from
intensive hands-on experiences that prepare them for future entry into the
cattle industry.
